On the nose, plenitude. . . spices. . . in the mouth the wine shows fat, breeding and fruit, but the sketch, the outline, is still not fully drawn. Great cellaring potential.

The 2008 Grands-Echezeaux is a stunningly beautiful wine. Exotic notes of star anise, fennel, hard candy and orange peel meld into a deep core of expressive fruit. The 2008 Grands-Echezeaux is powerful from start to finish, with endless layers of flavor that grow in the glass. It is a spherical, multi-dimensional Burgundy in need of at least a few years in the cellar, perhaps quite a few. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2038.

A notably riper, intensely spicy, airy and extremely fresh nose blends both red and blue berry fruit aromas as well as warm earth notes that continue onto the rich, velvety and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that display a bit more minerality than I typically find, all wrapped in a firm, racy and driving finish that delivers outstanding length. This is a dramatically good effort because this is always very good, it is rarely great but in 2008, it's first rate.

Perfumed with flowers, spice and a touch of oak, this is concentrated yet supple, with well-integrated tannins and a refined finish. A big step up from the V-R 1er cru.-Non-blind 2008 DRC tasting (February 2011). Best from 2014 through 3035.

The 2008 Echézeaux Grand Cru is beginning to show signs of maturation, with a little bricking on the rim. It has a leafy bouquet, hints of stewed black tea and damp moss, more advanced than I would have expected after almost a decade. The palate is well balanced with a light tobacco stain on the red fruit, becoming more cohesive in the second half with just a little warmth on the aftertaste. I would drink this in the near future - I am not totally convinced that it is a long-term proposition. Tasted at the Bistro Roch in Nuits Saint-Georges.
