This single-vineyard bottling showcases the stellar fruit of Hewitt Vineyard on Napa Valley's Rutherford bench. We harvest each vineyard section separately, as it reaches full ripeness, and adjust our winemaking to its character. Partial fermentation in new French oak barrels integrates tannins and develops plush texture. A high percentage of new French oak barrels complements the intensity of dark-fruit flavors.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. It captures all the intensity of this site, but with a lighter hand and more acid-driven freshness than in the past, both of which work so well to balance things out. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, spice and licorice all build with time in the glass.
Hewitt's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the brand's designated 60-acre vineyard on the western side of Highway 29. Cedar and vanilla notes frame gentle cassis on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, moderately concentrated and softly dusty on the finish. While an excellent wine when considered in isolation, given the vineyard site and pricing, it has to be considered a bit disappointing. Drink Date: 2022-2035.
