The 2020 Maturin hails solely from the esteemed James Berry Vineyard in the heart of the Willow Creek District. This vintage of Maturin offers a slightly more serious and masculine expression compared to the previous fruit-driven 2019 vintage. Pure, bright ruby colored in the glass, this wine takes you on a seamless journey beginning with ripe black cherry and cocoa on the nose. The palate blossoms with bright lively acidity with notes of fig, eucalyptus, and spicy white pepper. Aged in 75% new French Cavin barrels and the remainder in neutral French for 22 months. 112 cases produced. Enjoy now until 2033.

The 2020 Maturin bursts from the glass with a blend of crushed black raspberries and cedary spice lifted by mentholated herbs and a cooling lavender whiff. This is pure elegance, silky and refined, coasting along the palate with tart red fruits that take on a more tactile feel as saline-mineral tones slowly saturate. It finishes dramatically long and potent, leaving the senses drenched in wild berry and violet candy concentration. The 2020 remains harmonious throughout. The Maturin is a blend of 38% Graciano, 32% Syrah, 20% Mataro and 10% Grenache that's fermented using 20-25% whole clusters and refined in 90% new French oak. It's a beast.

The 2020 Maturin is another solid 2020 barrel sample. Based on one-third each of Graciano, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, with 10% Grenache, it has lots of red and black fruits, orange blossom, and dried cranberry nuances to go with a full-bodied, fresh, wonderfully pure style on the palate. I like its tannins as well as its overall balance, and it should have over a decade of longevity.
