Despite its proximity to Clos de la Roche, Clos-Saint-Denis tends to be more like a wine from Chambolle-Musigny with a pretty fragrance of red fruits and flowers and a supple texture on the palate. While it typically shows finesse, a great Clos-Saint-Denis should have a great intensity of flavor and length. This Grand Cru accompanies perfectly a roast duck breast with foie gras.

Big and chewy, displaying black cherry, blueberry, violet, licorice, tea and earth flavors. The muscular structure takes hold quickly, adding a coarse grain to the texture. Finishes long, with violet hints at the end. Best from 2022 through 2040. 55 cases made, 14 cases imported.

(90% of this wine was raised in jarres): Healthy medium red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, violet and licorice come across as distinctly darker and less aromatic than those of the 2016 version. Very dense and rich; in fact, unusually powerful for Clos Saint-Denis, conveying an impression of thick skins and serious tannins. I find this a bit tough today in its impression of almost bitter hard-rock minerality, and in need of extended cellaring. Magnien noted that the minerally terroirs like Chambolle-Musigny Borniques and the rocky Clos de la Roche and Cazetiers performed very well in 2015 but he considers Clos Saint-Denis more about elegance than strong minerality, adding that his clients virtually always prefer it to his Clos de la Roche in the early going. Still, I find this a bit tough and austere today, possibly due to an element of drought stress.
